How Do You Read Directions in Qimen Dunjia? Comparing the Eight Directions with Shijia Qimen

Qimen Dunjia is often associated with the question, “Which direction is lucky today?” In Shijia Qimen, however, direction is only one part of the reading. The chart also considers when you act and what you are trying to accomplish.

The chart changes when the time changes, even if the place stays the same

Shijia Qimen builds an hourly chart from the date and time of the action. Even when the place and purpose are unchanged, changing the departure time can change the Eight Gates, Nine Stars, Eight Deities, and other chart factors, which can also change the preferred direction.

Do not force a “best direction” every time

The goal is not to produce a recommended direction at all costs. Near an hourly transition, a solar-term boundary, an intercalary period, or when strong caution factors overlap, changing the time may be more useful than forcing a direction choice.

What matters also changes with the purpose

Career, job changes, sales, negotiations, money, love, relationships, study, competition, and travel do not emphasize exactly the same chart symbolism. Selecting the purpose helps translate the same traditional chart elements into a more practical reading.
