What Is Shijia Qimen? Why Does Time Change the Direction Reading?

When people use Qimen Dunjia for directions, a common question is: if the destination has not changed, why can changing only the time change the recommended direction? The reason is that Shijia Qimen itself is built around an hourly chart based on the time when the action begins.

Shijia Qimen reads the chart for a specific time

The chart is constructed from the action date and time. Earth Plate stems, Heaven Plate stems, the Eight Gates, Nine Stars, Eight Deities, and other elements are distributed across the palaces and then compared by direction. When the time changes, those combinations can change as well.

The same direction can mean something different at another time

Even when the destination and travel direction are exactly the same, a morning chart and an afternoon chart may place different Gates, Stars, and Deities in that direction. Shijia Qimen therefore asks not only “where are you going?” but also “when are you beginning the action?”

Be more cautious near time boundaries

When the entered time is very close to a chart transition, a difference of only a few minutes can affect the chart. In that situation, slightly changing the time and comparing again is often more useful than forcing a single “best” direction.

The purpose of the action also changes what matters most
